The Bond of Two Brothers – The Still Life of the Withered Sunflowers

In Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris, I discovered the grave of Theo and Vincent van Gogh on a dreary day. It was the end of autumn, and the cemetery was empty, which made the moment both sorrowful and special. The thought that these two brothers, far from home, lay so close together for eternity deeply moved me.

Near the grave, I saw withered sunflowers that, despite their decay, still radiated strength. I took them back to my studio and captured them symbolically as two brothers, united in their final resting place. They rest on a 17th-century tin plate, presented from an unconventional overhead perspective, highlighting the timeless bond between the brothers while also reflecting the transience of the moment.
