Clown

The Clown

The clown is a complex and layered subject, often associated with joy and humor, but also frequently with fear and unease in modern times. In my painting, I’ve captured the clown as a figure who is tired and sorrowful, slouched and exhausted from constantly playing his role. The need to laugh and always be the one who entertains has become a survival mechanism, but now he is done with it.

The painting is entirely done on raw linen, using traditional techniques, including an old gesso, which I used to give the work an authentic, timeless quality. The expression and composition reflect my own vision, inspired by the strength and rawness I admire in Rembrandt’s portraits, such as that of Margaretha de Geer. The frontal pose and the emotion expressed in these works were an important source of inspiration. However, this painting is entirely my own interpretation, with the vulnerability and discomfort of the clown at its core.
