De Japanse Kwee

The Japanese Quince

As a child, I saw them on my way to school – small yellow fruits growing in a hedge, not on a tree. For years, I didn’t know what they were — perhaps Japanese quince? They vanished from view, until one day, many years later, I saw them again.

In this painting, I captured them alongside a green French preserving jar I once found in France. Simple elements, but together they carry a quiet memory.

Oil on canvas – 50 x 30 cm
