The Old Enamel Tub
I once painted an old enamel tub I found on an abandoned farmyard. The object intrigued me, but the original format (40 x 50 cm) didn’t feel right compositionally.
Something about it bothered me — the painting existed, but it didn’t quite work.
Eventually, I cut two strips off the canvas until the format had the right tension and proportion. The object remained large and prominent, but found a stronger, more grounded place within the whole.
I’m always searching for a sense of compositional balance. Adding rose hips to the scene helped me to bring the elements together in a more harmonious way.
