The Sea of Galilee – A Revival of a Lost Masterpiece
Oil on canvas – 160 cm × 128 cm
Rembrandt’s The Sea of Galilee has been missing since the notorious art theft in Boston. Reconstructing this masterpiece was a tremendous challenge, as the original could no longer be physically studied. Through in-depth research and my years of experience with the palette of the old masters, I was able to restore the painting in fine detail.
To capture the essence of the work, I visited the museum in Boston where it once hung and spoke with the guards about the stolen masterpiece. Every element, from the initial glue layer and 17th-century grounding to the handmade paint and varnish, was crafted using traditional techniques. The composition was especially labor-intensive due to the dynamic scene and the large number of disciples on the boat.
This reconstruction matches the exact dimensions of the original and serves as a tribute to Rembrandt’s unparalleled craftsmanship.
