Transience
This still life displays a collection of beautiful, old objects: berkemeyers, roemers, silver, and an old clock. They seem to speak of a time long past, a transient beauty that, with the years, only gains more meaning.
Yet, much like my own experience with martens in an isolated attic, there is always an invisible force that wears down the work, the still life that slowly deteriorates.
Subtly, I have incorporated these uninvited guests into the painting – the same way time touches everything, even the most cherished.
Now, this still life is not something you’d want to eat from, because it’s not just time that decays it, but also the idea of perfection that slowly fades away.
