Twisted Birches – Wadden Landscape

In this painting, you see a damp, marshy area on one of the Dutch Wadden Islands. Water is present everywhere, but not high – it seeps into the ground, making it heavy. Among the grass, small, twisted birches grow, with crooked trunks shaped by the moist, uneven soil.

They seem fragile, yet firmly rooted in this quiet, ever-changing landscape.

Oil on panel – 120 x 93 cm
